Dr. Mohan Kameswaran is an Indian Otorhinolaryngologist, medical academic and the founder of Madras ENT Research Foundation and the Institute of Speech and Hearing, a Chennai-based institution providing advanced training in audiology and speech-language pathology. He is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India and a visiting professor at Rajah Muthiah Medical College of the Annamalai University and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai.
Dr. Kameswaran has many firsts to his credit such as the performance of the first auditory brain stem implantation surgery in South and South East Asia, the first pediatric brain stem implantation surgery in Asia, the first totally implantable hearing device surgery in Asia Pacific region, and the first to introduce KTP/532 laser-assisted ENT surgery in India.
The Government of India awarded Dr. Kameswaran the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. He also received the prestigious Dr. BC Roy award, the highest medical honor in India. He was also conferred “INDO-AUSTRALIAN AWARD FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE’ by Indo-Australian Association, Chennai. He was honored by His Excellency, President of Sri Lanka for ‘PIONEERING THE COCHLEAR IMPLANT PROGRAM IN SRI LANKA’. He was awarded with ‘AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE’ by His Excellency, The Governor of Kerala. He was also conferred ‘FOR THE SAKE OF HONOUR AWARD’ by Rotary Club of Madras Esplanade, Chennai.
Madras ENT Research Foundation hospital started by Dr. Mohan Kameswaran is one of the leading centers of ENT Practice and Research. For years it has been a Mecca for ENT & Audiology related education in India. Numerous students have passed through its portals. It has also served as a centre for higher learning for overseas surgeons and audiologists. Dr. Mohan Kameswaran is one of the key figures in revolutionizing social awareness towards deafness in India.
